Step 1 โ DS-160 online form
Every applicant fills DS-160 online at ceac.state.gov. Save the application ID and barcode confirmation page โ both required at interview.
Step 2 โ Pay MRV fee + book interview
MRV fee is USD 185 (paid via ustraveldocs). Wait times vary wildly โ check multiple consulates. Some applicants travel to a third country for faster slots (legal, but plan for refusal under 214(b) which limits this).
Step 3 โ Document set
Officers decide in 60โ90 seconds. Strong ties to home country win. Bring the document set but expect to use 1โ3 items.
Step 4 โ Interview
Be brief, honest, consistent. Most common rejection reason: failure to demonstrate non-immigrant intent under section 214(b). Practice 'why this trip, why these dates, what ties bring you back'.
